New South Africa explored

Rainbow Scars premiered in Cape Town at the Artscape Arena in April and went on to be performed at the National Arts Festival where it was very well received, gaining a nomination for a Standard Bank Ovation Award.

Rainbow Scars is set in April 1994 when the ‘Rainbow Nation’ was born. Ellen Robinson (Jennifer Steyn), a suburban mother, adopts Lindiwe (Kertrice Maitisa), a ‘born-free’ orphan who loses her parents in the ‘New South Africa’.

Fast forward to 2012. Something happens that not only challenges the mother-daughter relationship, but brings to the surface the scars of a country still struggling to heal itself of its divided past.

Rainbow Scars explores the complexities of contemporary South African relationships, layered with dollops of humour. The play is directed by Lara Bye.

“After Green Man Flashing and so many other plays written by the gifted Mike van Graan, we now have, with Rainbow Scars, another delightful work by this great writer”, says, James Ngcobo, artistic director, Market Theatre.

Please note that due to the nature of the performance no entry will be allowed once the performance has commenced. The play runs at the Market Theatre from November 1 until December 8.
