New anchor Ivor not a Cruywagen clone
New Afrikaans anchor Ivor Price is facing the daunting task of stepping into the shoes of veteran newsreader Riaan Cruywagen, but says he plans to inject his own flavour into the primetime bulletin.

Price made his debut as anchor for SABC2’s seven o’clock news bulletin last week, replacing the legendary Cruywagen who retired from this role in November 2012 after 37 years. He says, though, that he doesn’t “want to be the new Riaan Cruywagen” but rather strives to be “the new Ivor Price”.
“Like many South Africans, I have the greatest respect for Riaan Cruywagen and his unrivalled track record in the news, but times have changed,” he told the Daily Voice. “I want to interview guests during the news bulletin. And do a lot more things off the cuff and to be able to think on my feet.”
Hailing from Kraaifontein, the 33-year-old is no stranger to live broadcasting after previously co-anchoring the Afrikaans news on SABC News International and also hosting a show on Radio Sonder Grense.
“But nothing can prepare you for doing the news at seven on SABC2, that’s just totally different because you’re on your own,” Price said.
Speaking to the publication, Ivor’s mother recalled how he said “it is an honour to sit in the same chair as Riaan Cruywagen” ahead of his nail-biting first appearance.
Beaming with pride, she added: “These now famous words were wonderful for our family to hear: ‘This is the news at seven on SABC2, good evening I’m Ivor Price’.”
