Movie movers in 2015

The National Film and Video Foundation of the department of arts and culture estimates that movie box office sales were R382 million by June this year.


Hollywood blockbusters Transformers: Age of Extinction and The Amazing Spiderman 2 took top spot in the takings.

American films dominated South African screens this year. By the end of 2014, it is estimated that film theatres turned over just under R1 billion.

South Africans can look forward to a number of reboots and sequels in 2015.

Here are some top picks for next year:

Avengers: Age of Ultron 

Starring among others Robert Downey Jr, Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo and Chris Hemsworth.

In the slick superhero romp, partially filmed in Johanneburg’s Hillbrow, Tony Stark tries to jump-start a dormant peacekeeping programme, things go awry and it is up to the Avengers to defeat the villainous Ultron.

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2

Katniss Everdeen and District 13 engage in an all-out revolution against the autocratic Capitol in the last instalment of The Hunger Games film series.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens 

With original stars Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher and Adam Driver.

A reboot of the Star Wars franchise, the film is set 30 years after Return of the Jedi.

Spectre

Starring Daniel Craig, Christoph Waltz, Ralph Fiennes and Monica Bellucci.

A cryptic message from Bond’s past sends him on a trail to uncover a sinister organisation. While M battles political forces to keep the secret service alive, Bond peels back the layers of deceit to reveal the terrible truth behind Spectre.

Furious 7 

Starring Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham.

The seventh installment in the Fast and Furious franchise. Deckard Shaw seeks revenge against Dominic Toretto and his family for the death of his brother.

Jurassic World 

Starring Chris Pratt, Judy Greer, Ty Simpkins and Bryce Dallas Howard.

The fourth instalment of the Jurassic Park franchise. Set 22 years after the events of the orginal series, a new attraction at Isla Nublar backfires horribly.

Taken 3 

Starring Liam Neeson, Maggie Grace, Famke Janssen and Forest Whitaker.

Bryan Mills, an ex-government operative, is accused of a murder he never committed or witnessed. He is tracked and pursued, and must bring out his particular set of skills to find the real killer and clear his name.
