Millions ‘missing’ from SABC soapie Muvhango – report

SABC 2’s popular week day soapie Muvhango is rumoured to be facing a financial crisis, according to the Sunday Sun.

The Word Of Mouth Pictures soapie – written and produced by Duma Ka-Ndlovu – was allegedly defrauded of more than R4.5 million, with insiders saying they don’t know when the money disappeared or which account had been affected.

“But this whole situation will make innocent people suffer if actors don’t get paid. Logistics are hanging in the balance,” warned one insider.

Another source told the tabloid: “I think we’ve had problems in the past. But this one is the worst because people could be left jobless. Someone was driven by greed and it’s unfair. Duma Ka-Ndlovu and other producers from Word Of Mouth have been having back-to-back meetings.”

The source further said the producers were trying to come up with a plan to get extra money to pay workers on the production team, “but if they fail, they’ll have no choice but to let actors go”.

Muvhango’s publicist Amanda Ngudle, according to the report, has allayed fears that people would lose their jobs, saying rumours and fears of job losses were ill-founded.

“A forensic investigation has led to the suspension of an accounts employee at Word Of Mouth Pictures and investigations are continuing,” she said.

“There shall be no job losses. In fact, we have signed new contracts with all employees, with the exception of Phindile Gwala, who resigned last month.”

Gwala played the bubbly character of Nonny.
