Mariah Carey, the best-selling female artist of all time among many other records, celebrates the release of her 2005 album, The Emancipation of Mimi, with the release of remixes from the album.
“The Emancipation of Mimi represents an incredible part of my life. Obviously, the music and the songs and just where it took me as an artist and as a person,” said Carey in a video on her social media.
The 20th anniversary edition of The Emancipation of Mimi, set for a May 30 release, will feature remixes by international dance music producers Esentrik and Kaytranada.
In January, the latter headlined the Milk & Cookies Festival in Cape Town and Johannesburg. On Friday, a Kaytranada remix of Carey’s Don’t Forget About Us was released.

We Belong Together’s success
Reflecting on the album’s songs, Carey said Fly Like a Bird is her favourite song on the 2005 project.
“Fly Like a Bird is probably the vocal take that I’m most proud of. It was just a strong message that I was kind of writing to God, to myself, to my fans. It still feels that way to me,” she said.
Carey said the recording of hit songs like We Belong Together and It’s Like That were her most memorable moments of putting the album together.
“They were just funny,” she said. “Those moments were really hilarious, and I would want to relive them because they were fun.”
We Belong Together is the song which still receives the most cheers when she performs the album live. “It’s hard to ever know what something’s gonna become,” she said, reflecting on the song and its success.
“Nobody could’ve predicted what happened with that song,” she said.
The song was Carey’s sixteenth topper on the US Billboard Hot 100, with Billboard listing it as the “song of the decade” and the fifteenth most popular song of all time.
At the 48th Grammy Awards in 2006, We Belong Together won Best Female R&B Vocal Performance and Best R&B Song awards.
