KZN government is reportedly scrambling to find funds to host the 29th edition of the South African Music Awards (SAMAs).
According to News24, the government is trying to get R20 million to cover the awards ceremony.
The proposed budget will reportedly be allocated as follows: R2.5 million for the host Province Association Fee, R11.5 million for SAMA live broadcast and non-broadcast show, excluding venue hire.
“R2 million for SAMA red-carpet show, R420 000 for Road2SAMA activations in six cities (six influencers/celebrity champions will get R70 000 each), R6.5 million lifetime achievement gala dinner, R3 million for SAMA goodie bag experience, and R225 000 SAMA Golf Day.”

In a statement released earlier this week, eThekwini mayor Mxolisi Kaunda said the city anticipated a direct spend of over R25 million with the injection to the city’s gross domestic product estimated to be R63 million.
“We will offer five-star accommodation as well as an array of experiences that visitors can enjoy, including adventure, culture, heritage, culinary, the beach, and shopping. The list is endless of activities to enjoy in the city which is why we can proudly say #DurbanHasMore.”
He said the awards will help the province attract tourists and create jobs.
“It is a great platform to market destination Durban to the millions of viewers and music lovers who will be attending the SAMAs ahead of the festive season.
“Such events are an opportunity for us to showcase the beauty and adventure that the city has to offer. It is also an opportunity to grow the local economy. We expect 123 job opportunities to be created from hosting the SAMAs which is also an opportunity for local small businesses to thrive,” he said.
Speaking at the SAMA nominee’s announcement party at the Soweto Theatre earlier this month, KZN MEC for Economic Development, Tourism, and Environmental Affairs Siboniso Duma said the provincial government was happy to host the awards.
“We have no doubt the entire tourism industry and other sectors of our economy will be stimulated. We are looking forward to hosting thousands of music lovers. Tourists will visit our province ahead of the SAMAs and during the event itself.
“Rest assured, you will be warm enough, you’ll be welcomed and enjoy what’s on the ground,” said Duma.
The awards will take place at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre on 17 and 18 November 2023.
