I stand by my statements unapologetically, says Tumi Morake

'I have remained quiet for the past few days and watched things spiral out of control.'

Comedian and radio host Tumi Morake has responded to the commotion around her remarks on apartheid that she made on her radio show.

Morake released a statement on Thursday evening, saying: “I stand by my statements. Unapologetically.”

Jacaranda FM stood by Morake, saying she had not intended to insult any racial demographic, and was “intended only to express her view of the apartheid period”.

Since then, a number of advertisers have pulled away from the station.

“I have remained quiet for the past few days and watched things spiral out of control. Hate begets hate, let’s not perpetuate it,” she said.

Morake continued:

  1. I stand by my statements. Unapologetically.
  2. The station stands by my statements.
  3. South Africa is a diverse country with many different viewpoints which matter.
  4. I would be remiss not to address the furor about my sentiments and I decided to reach across to other side. I was not forced.
  5. I needed to be proactive and so I exercised my agency in listening to views different from my own.
  6. It’s important to engage each other across our differences. And also, stop giving voice to the extreme right and left who hijack these kinds of conversations to forward their own agenda.
  7. We need to listen to each other as a country, and move together to solve the problems facing our joint futures.
