I was a student at the University of Pretoria, better known as Tuks or UP, and it was the best three or so years of my life. Hatfield Square was the place to go when you were a student. You could’ve been a student from anywhere and a good time was guaranteed there. Whether it was a Monday afternoon or Wednesday, there was always something happening at the Square. The Square provided everything for you from meeting new people, drinking to socialising and picking up someone to take home that night.
There were many laughs that were shared over drinks, many tears shed over cheating boyfriends and girlfriends and many a cotching sessions there. The Square was close proximity to where everyone stayed and everyone went down there, even the churchgoing folk. Even after graduation, people would walk in the Square with their graduation gowns and show off the fact that they are officially done with tertiary life. Thanks to the Square many friendships have been formed, fights ensued and many have met the loves of their lives.
So here’s to the Square and all the other students around Pretoria who’ll never know what it was like there – it was the best place ever as a student.
This is how people bid farewell to the Square on Twitter:
