Dr John Kani is one of three cover stars and the recipient of the GQ Men of the Year Lifetime Achievement Award – a first for the South African men’s magazine. He will feature alongside musician Nasty C and designer Tristan Du Plessis, who were among the winners at the inaugural GQ Men of the Year Awards ceremony.
The awards were held in association with Hennessy on Sunday night at The Houghton Hotel with the aim of celebrating people who have made a considerable mark in their respective fields. The event also served the purpose of marking GQ’s 20 years in South Africa.
“South Africans habitually dominate every field they touch. With that in mind, we thought the time was right to create a new celebration, right here at home, to honour the achievements of the men and women who define our culture today and who propel us forward,” said GQ’s first African editor, Nkosiyati Khumalo.
Other winners on the night include the likes of Siya Kolisi, Vusi Themebkwayo, Thembinkosi Lorch, and Lady Skollie.
