Getting the nation dancing

Some of SA's biggest artist will be battling it out for the Song of yhe Year accolade at tonight's Metro FM Awards.

In arguably the evening’s biggest category, musicians who made some of last year’s hottest tracks hope to be the ones to get the audience dancing at the end of the ceremony. At the top of the list of nominations is Afro-pop group Mafikizolo (pictured), with three nominations in the category for the hits Khona, Happiness, and Reunited.

“I’m overly excited for these nominations,” says singer Nhlanhla Nciza. “It feels like we are getting our very first award.”

Speaking about what makes Mafikizolo special, Nciza says: “We have genuine love for one another as a group and every time we make an album, people can feel that love.”

House band Mi Casa is also hoping to get South Africans dancing to their hit Jika tonight, whether they win the award or not.

“The Metros have a very special place in our hearts,” says singer J’Something, “but last time we were nominated for five awards and walked away with nothing. So we just feel like whatever happens will happen.”

With two platinum albums and one of the most played songs on radio in the last year, J’Something feels that they are most deserving of the award. The final decision, though, is up to public votes.

The Metro FM awards will air tonight on SABC1 at 8pm.
