Initially only scheduled to perform in Cape Town and Johannesburg, the award-winning singer will now also strut his stuff at the Wavehouse in Durban on Monday, 9 December. He will otherwise be at Cape Town’s Grand Arena on Thursday, 5 December, and at the Coca-Cola Dome on Saturday, 7 December.
According to the Sowetan, promoters Canoc Productions found it hard to ignore the pleas after they were “inundated with requests for the ‘Pretty wings’ singer to serenade the Durban crowd”.
Born Gerald Maxwell Rivera in Brooklyn, New York, Maxwell’s music has throughout his career extended over various genres, including R&B, funk, and soul. He is, however, considered as one of the forerunners of the neo-soul subgenre of the late 90s, alongside other artist like D’Angelo and Erykah Badu.
Maxwell enjoyed great success with his 1996 debut album, ‘Maxwell’s Urban Hang Suite’. He released two more studio albums before going on an eight-year hiatus.
In 2008, he made his comeback at the BET Awards where he responded to questions about his lengthy break from music by saying he wanted “to just take time off. The music industry has so much competition and there was no rush for me”.
He officially returned to the music scene in July 2009 with the release of ‘BLACKsummers’night’, which is said to be the first album in a planned trilogy. The second album in the trilogy, ‘Summers’, will be out in 2014.
Tickets for the shows range from R390 and R850 and are available at Computicket.
