Disney+ releases 3-hour trailer for the streaming service

Several high-profile projects from Disney-owned Marvel Studios remain absent due to existing license deals with other streaming platforms.

How best to illustrate the depth of content coming to the US launch of streaming service Disney+?

The Mouse House put together a trailer filled with 10- to 20-second snippets to show it can compete with, or complement, established offerings from Netflix, Amazon Video, and elsewhere.

Covering 82 years of Disney output, Disney+ launches on November 12 with 629 shows and movies.

That’s the message clearly received from Disney social media, after its DisneyPlus Twitter account listed “basically everything” coming to the service upon its US debut.

Those range from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937), Pinocchio and Swiss Family Robinson (1940) through to 2019’s exclusive new Lady and the Tramp and Star Wars series The Mandalorian.

Yet while 1970 animated movie Spider-Woman might be in there, several other high-profile projects from Disney-owned Marvel Studios remain absent.

Those include the two Marvel Cinematic Universe Spider-Man films, the Captain America trilogy, Thor and Thor: Ragnarok, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, most of the Avengers ensemble movies, Ant-Man and the Wasp and Iron Man 2.

By the same token, Iron Man and Iron Man 3 are present, as are Ant-Man, Thor: The Dark World, Guardians of the Galaxy and Avengers: Age of Ultron.

Those, and other omissions, seem to be down to existing licensing deals with other streaming platforms; some, like The Incredible Hulk and the Spider-Man movies, are because Universal and Sony Pictures respectively are currently in charge of distribution.

Disney+ launches November 12 in the US and Canada at US $6.99 / CA $8.99 (R105) per month or $69.99 / CA $89.99 (R1,050) per year, allowing four simultaneous streams per account and undercutting Netflix’s basic tier offer.

An Australia and New Zealand launch is set for November 19 (AU $8.99 / NZ $9.99 month, AU $89.99 / NZ $99.99 per year).

Apple launches Apple TV+ on November 1, with eight exclusive original series and a nature documentary at launch, and nearly 40 more shows and films announced for future release.

Apple TV+ is free for owners of new iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, Mac, or Apple TV hardware (purchased September 10 or after), or US $4.99 (R75) per month for a six-person family account with a one-week free trial.
