Comedian David Kau will be hosting the twelfth annual Blacks Only comedy show on February 27 at Emperors Palace in Johannesburg – but this time under the theme #MonkeysMustFall, which will focus on some current affairs issues that have had South Africans talking recently.
Kwazulu-Natal realtor Penny Sparrow made headlines earlier this year when she referred to black people as monkeys on Facebook.
This led to a widespread condemnation of her views with some people even poking fun at being likened to monkeys.
Another hot topic which is likely to come up at the comedy show is the #MustFall campaigns, which have taken the country by storm since students from the University Of Cape Town protested in order to have the statue of Cecil John Rhodes removed from their campus.
The hashtag #RhodesMustFall trended numerous times on social networks and was followed by other campaigns including #FeesMustFall and #ZumaMustFall. Comedians in the line-up this year include Chris Mopane, Mpho Popps, King Flat, Loyiso Madingo and Kagiso Mokgadi.
Kau launched the Blacks Only comedy show in 2004 as a way to offer black audiences live comedy, but has said that the show isn’t only open to black people, nor is it focused on race. Having gotten into the comedy scene back in 1998, Kau is one of the country’s most respected comedians.
