Various Netflix users noticed some surprises when logging onto the streaming portal, and were met with a message that read: “If you don’t live with the owner of this account, you need your account to keep watching.”
This lead many to assume the streaming service was purging users who share too many accounts and do not pay for the streaming service. It’s become commonplace for people to share various accounts to avoid paying for the service.
Upon inquiry, a Netflix spokesperson explained to The Citizen: “We want to ensure that the people using Netflix accounts are authorised to do so – both by the member who owns the account and under our terms of service.”
There are instances when users forget to sign out of accounts or share their accounts for a short time and decide to take back the sharing. The power should be in the hands of the account holder.
Netflix further elaborates on the move: “We’re testing in a number of countries around the world, but we’re not able to provide a full list. We plan to first evaluate the test results before making any other decisions”.
Tests need to be conducted in various markets before a final way forward on the matter can be perused.
“We are always working to improve the Netflix experience for our members around the world. We use tests to get valuable feedback from our members to inform how we move forward.”
