Challenging perceptions: The Body Image Movement

Is there such a thing as the perfect body? Will women ever be satisfied with the way they look?


I for one know that you will never be happy with your own body if you look at other women to define the way you think you should look.

We want what others have but when we get it we realise it isn’t all we thought it would be. The only way a woman finds perfection is by loving herself from tip to toe, no matter what the scale says or the mirror reveals.

I grew up an extremely thin and scrawny young girl, and all I ever wanted was to put on a few extra kilos. To put some fat on my bones so they wouldn’t protrude. I was in no way unhealthy or unnourished, just merely skinny.

At age 25, it all changed. I began putting on weight. At first I thought it was the best thing ever – this is what I’ve always wanted, right? But the weight gain continued and soon I found myself in the exact same position – unsatisfied with the way I looked.

Unlike most people’s before and after pictures who have their overweight picture on the left and the more well-rounded one on the right, Taryn Brumfitt, Founder of Body Image Movement, has flipped them around – and it’s a good thing.

Her aim is to promote healthy living and change the way women see their bodies.

A positive body image activist, Brumfitt is on a mission to create a feature length documentary that will unite women across the globe to love their bodies and to realise the value and power of loving yourself from the inside out.
