The longest-reigning Miss Universe in history Zozibini Tunzi has urged the public to assist in convincing the South African government to implement a Food Donations Policy to end hunger.
Taking to her personal Instagram account, Zozibini alongside FoodForward South Africa calls on the public to sign a petition to end hunger as South Africa is one of the few countries that does not have a policy to govern food donations.
Yet more than 10 million tons of good quality, edible surplus food is either lost or wasted throughout the supply chain annually, while nearly 30 million people experience moderate to severe food insecurity regularly each month.
FoodForward SA’s food banking model is a cost-effective solution to addressing food insecurity while saving the environment.
According to Tunzi, at least 100 000 signatures are needed on a petition to convince the South African government to implement a Food Donations Policy.
The implementation of the Food Donations Policy will allow SA to recover quality, within-date food from farmers, post-harvest handlers, manufacturers, and retailers, and redistribute this food to improve food security at the household level and end malnutrition.
According to Statista, Between 2018 and 2020, the number of people undernourished in South Africa amounted to 3.8 million, showing an increase compared to previous years. During the period under review, the number of undernourished people in the country generally increased.
Sharing with her 2.7 million followers who flooded the post’s comments by taking initiative to combat hunger in South Africa, Tunzi’s call has unified those who want to see change.
Some praised the former Miss Universe commenting “signed” to support the end hunger initiative.
“Please, share your signature by signing the petition [ foodforwardsa.org/petition ] and help us get to 100 000. Thank you,” she concluded.
