Actress Ziya Xulu says winning the Newcomer award at the Simon Mabhunu Sabela KZN Film and Television Awards was a life-changing moment for her.
She won the Best Newcomer award in 2024 for her breakout role as Piklile in the hit series Shaka iLembe.
Speaking to The Citizen, Xulu said the win was one of the most affirming experiences of her career.
“Winning the Simon Mabhunu Sabela was literally one of the best moments of my life. It means so much to any young actor who has left their home province in pursuit of a dream.
“To know that your home is watching, proud of you, and cheering you on,” she added.
Xulu believes that awards play a critical role in uplifting young talent and creating new opportunities in the industry.
The 2025 edition of the Simon Mabhunu Sabela Awards will take place on 19 July in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal.
Nominations closed last week, and the official nominee announcement will be made by the end of June.
“The Simon Sabelas are not just about recognition — they’re about growth. They allow us to interact with production houses, collaborate with fellow creatives, and celebrate one another,” Xulu added.

Ziya Xulu on bagging an international show
While she has wrapped filming for Shaka iLembe season 2 — which will premiere on Sunday, 15 June, on Mzansi Magic — Xulu has another exciting project on the horizon.
“I have an awesome show coming up soon. It is an international production, so it will be my second time doing international work, and I’m really excited about that, although I can’t dive into what it is for now.”
Xulu also shared that she has plans to return to theatre and pursue her music career.
“I miss the theatre, and I’m looking forward to doing more work on stage. I love working on screen, but I want to balance both. I’m also excited to fall in love with music again.”
