Hollywood couple Will Smith and his wife Jada Pinkett Smith have topped the trending charts after a Jada Pinkett interview on US television NBC News.

According to Jada, she and Will have lived “completely separate lives” since 2016. The couple married in 1997.

In the startling revelation, Pinkett said while she considered a legal divorce, she had never been able to go through with it.

“I made a promise that there will never be a reason for us to get a divorce. We will work through … whatever. I just haven’t been able to break that promise.”

The pair’s relationship came under the spotlight at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic when Pinkett’s “entanglement” with singer August Alsina surfaced in 2020.

A shocking slap

The couple came under the social microscope again last year when Will slapped comedian Chris Rock after he joked about Pinkett’s hair at the 2022 Academy Awards as host.

In a separate interview with People, Pinkett admitted to being gobsmacked by the whole incident too, initially thinking that the whole thing was a skit for the show.

“I was like, ‘there’s no way that Will hit him.’ It wasn’t until Will started to walk back to his chair that I even realised it wasn’t a skit.”

The first words she said to Will once they were alone after the show were, “Are you okay?”

In the interview with the publication, Jada opens up about being depressed, especially about a decade ago.

“But, while I was really living the dream, I hit a huge wall — a massive amount of depression. I think that I looked at having outside sources to supplement for the voids that I was feeling inside.”

She said the “voices” were incoming.

“‘Just kill yourself. You’re not worth anything, you ain’t s—.’ ” Jada began to plot her death. “I started looking for places, cliffs where I could have an accident, because I didn’t want my kids to think that their mother had committed suicide.”

A field day for netizens

As expected, the snippet of the interview – which comes on Friday in full – has brought to light the ugly side of gender politics among netizens some of whom have seen the couple’s marital woes as a joke.
