The Grammy Awards, the most glamorous night in the American music calendar each year, took place on Monday in Los Angeles. The awards saw Taylor Swift making history as the first woman to win Album of the Year Grammy twice, with Kendrick Lamar also winning five awards.
However, not everyone celebrated the Grammys, with Cassper Nyovest saying they were boring because Chris Brown did not perform, also complaining about the bad sound which saw Adele doing her “worst” performance.
Ntsiki Mazwai on the other hand, was just not happy about the diversity at the awards, saying they were white-dominated. She took to Twitter to express her disappointment at the awards as “black Americans are used for credibility and hype”.
“The Grammy awards just another platform where white people use black people for hype…but award their untalented selves,” she tweeted.
Some of her followers supported her, while some lashed at her who being “racist”. She however responded, saying she was not being racist, and that “black people sing the best in the world”.
One follower supported her, saying having Taylor Swift and D’angelo in the same category was “disrespectful”.
Ntsiki also took to Twitter to express how Lauren Hill’s work has not received the recognition it deserves, saying Hill was ganged upon by the white media. The comment comes after Hill pulled out of the Grammys at the last minute, joining Rihanna, who could not perform due to “vocal problems”.
She tweeted:
This comes after the Oscar Awards nominees announcement, which received criticism for lack of non-white contenders. This led to social media users posting numerous complaints online with the #OscarsSoWhite tag and Jada Pinkett Smith confirming she would be boycotting the Oscars.
