WATCH: Joe Mafela opens up in one of his last endearing TV interviews

The veteran TV personality and businessman was born in 1942, hailing from Sibasa, Limpopo Province and affectionately known by fans as ‘Sdumo’ the character which he played on the local Zulu sitcom Sgudi ‘Snaysi.

Metro police spokesperson Edna Mamonyane confirmed the news in an official statement, “We can confirm that at 21:45 on M1 North between the Oxford and Houghton turn-offs there was an accident between a Ford Figo and a bakkie which took place in construction zone. The Bakkie hit the Ford which caused damage to the left hand side of the Ford Figo. The driver of the Figo‚ driven by Mr Mafela‚ was declared fatal by paramedics on the scene. His fatal condition may have been a medical condition that was brought in during the accident but an investigation into this is now underway.”

Some interesting facts about Mr Mafela

  • He made his first film debut at the tender age of 22 in 1964 in a movie titled Real News which was directed by Peter Hunt.
  • About ten years later Bra Joe featured in Peter Hunt’s Shout at the Devil which was shot during the 1976 Soweto riots at Brodestroom, west of Pretoria, close to the Haartebeespoort Dam.
  • 1996 saw Joe Mafela release his first-ever music album titled Shebeleza with Johannesburg based recording company, Gallo Records. Shebeleza was such a huge success, the title song was used as a theme song during the Africa Cup of Nations in 1996.
  • Three more albums were released thereafter.
  • He did a lot of advertising and producing work including voice-overs, radio materials and theatre shows.

To the point of his death,75-year-old Mr Mafela was  in the entertainment industry for more than 40 years and was acting on Generations The Legacy as Tebogo Moroka. Mr Joe Mafela may be gone but he will never be forgotten. May his precious soul rest in peace and may his legacy live on.
