Also popularly known as Bra Soldate, Motha was part of SA musical quartet ‘The Saints’ which in 1961 travelled to London, where they performed all African jazz opera ‘King Kong’.

While many of his colleagues went into exile in England, Motha returned to South Africa and joined the stable of township theatre guru Gibson Kente. He was part of many major black productions, including ‘Mama’s Love’, ‘Ngaka’, and Alan Paton’s ‘Sponono’.

“It is a great loss to us as a family, particularly to my mother Mandisa, to whom he had been married for 41 years,” his daughter, S’lindile Mathbe, told the Sowetan.”

Masoja Motha passed away at the age of 74 and is survived by his wife, son, three daughters, and seven grandchildren.
