Tshedi Mholo has officially left Malaika

Tshedi Mholo, member of popular South African afro-pop duo, Malaika, has quit the group.

Mholo recently released a lengthy statement where she announced that she would be leaving the outfit to focus on greener pastures.

Taking to social media, Mholo said the decision was not easy, and that calling it quits came from a positive place.

“I want to leave no room for public speculation and make it clear that this was no easy decision to take but most importantly it was one borne out of positivity and not negativity, with no animosity involved – neither with my fellow band member, Bongani; the recording label; management or partners broadly,” said Mholo in the statement.

Mholo explained that being a part of the band for this long was starting to take a toll on her on many levels, and she had reached her breaking point.

“The truth that I have for many years kept out of public eye, newsfeeds and social media timelines for sake of the brand, is that, especially recently, being in the band really took a toll on me on so many levels and I have reached a stage where I cannot carry the burden any further,” said Mholo.

The vocalist says she has been exploring other avenues of her life and different musical genres, such as gospel, and she is working on releasing new music as a solo artist.

“I have been exploring other genres, including my personal favourite which is gospel and I am excited of what is to come and am already having conversations with a number of fellow artists for possible collaborations,” said the activist.

The afro-pop band’s two most memorable hits are Destiny, which was their breakout hit single, as well 2 Bob.

When the third member of the band, Jabulani Ndaba, passed away, Mholo and Bongani Nchang went their separate ways before later reuniting.
