Tshedi Mholo dispels Malaika breakup rumours

After the recent release of Tshedi Mholo's solo album 'Victory' rumours have been swirling that the move by the lead singer of Malaika meant the end of the group but Mholo maintains that it isn't so.

After years of a successful career in the afro-pop group, Malaika, the lead singer Tshedi Mholo has decided to release her solo album. The album hit stores last week.

“It took me three years to complete this album because I wanted it to be perfect. I always recorded material and saved it – and also brought in different producers to advise me on the sound”, she says.

“I worked with artists such as Robby Malinga, DJ choice, Guffi, Babsy Mlangeni, Jahseed and Fally Ipupa from the DRC, so it’s a variety of sounds.” she adds.

As for the rumours surrounding Malaika and the band’s split, she explains: “I have never left Malaika. I have never abandoned it and it will always remain a priority for me but I felt that now was a good time for me to release something on my own.”

According to Sowetan Live, Mholo said that the possibility of working on solo projects was something the group discussed before they made it big.

“Even before Malaika, I dreamt of working on my own, releasing my own material and giving my own special touch to it because what Tshedi touches turns into shimmer’, she laughs.
