The entertainment industry is reeling following the death of singer and Big Nuz member, Mandela ‘Mampintsha’ Maphumalo.
Media personalities including South African DJ and record producer Oskido, as well as musician Nomcebo Zikode, paid tribute to the late Big Nuz member.
Musical artist Mampintsha passed away on Saturday morning after suffering a minor stroke last week, as confirmed by his record label, Afrotainment, on Thursday.
The Citizen received confirmation of the passing of the Big Nuz member from a close friend and fellow artist, DJ Tira.
DJ Tira said: “This is the saddest day. We were so close and so happy recently, excited about the Big Nuz come back. Why now?”
Tributes poured in with industry peers sending condolences to the Maphumalo family and sharing their fondest moments of the late Big Nuz member.
“Askies baba ka Sponge! RIP Shimora, you were a colourful and vibrant character, always with the big hits!
Condolences to your wife, family, friends and fans,” media personality Khanyi Magubane.
“Rest in peace, my brother,” Makhadzi wrote.
“Ay kub’hlungu guys (it hurts). Mina I don’t know why are we burying our brothers and sisters at such a young age, like this. Lord intervene, this is getting too much. Nxese bhuti. Lala ngoxolo mfowethu, sesohlangana phambili (I’m sorry my brother, rest in peace. We’ll meet again). Condolences to all friends, loved ones, colleagues, supporters, fans, team and your family. May your soul rest in peace,” DJ Sbu wrote on Instagram.
There was shock on Twitter as many fans sent their condolences to Mampintsha’s family, particularly his wife Babes Wodumo (real name Bongekile Simelane), as the couple share a son Sponge.
The pair tied the knot in 2021 and their wedding was screened in a Showmax special, in addition to the reality TV show Uthando Lodumo.
According to Afrotainment, details on the memorial and funeral arrangements will be shared by the family in due course.
The family asks that the public and media respect their privacy as they deal with this difficult loss.
