Shortly after her representatives announced the news of Tina Turner’s death, Coldplay kicked off the first of their four concerts in Barcelona, at the Olympic Stadium, with a cover version of Proud Mary.

Tina, born Anna Mae Bullock, rose to fame in the 1960s as part of the husband-and-wife musical act Ike & Tina Turner Revue.

Proud Mary, where Tina and the Ikettes performed their unforgettable high-energy, intricate dance moves, became the act’s biggest hit.

In 1976, after suffering years of physical and emotional abuse from Ike, Tina walked out of the marriage with only her performance name and 36 cents in her pocket, according to her 1986 memoir, I, Tina: My Life Story.

The best-selling memoir was turned into the Academy Award-nominated film What’s Love Got to Do with It, starring Angela Bassett, in 1993.

Tina Turner and David Bowie

Tina, who rose from the ashes with the hit songs What’s Love Got To Do With It, Private Dancer and The Best, credited her fellow musician friend, the late David Bowie, for getting back on her feet in a 2004 interview with Female First.

The official Twitter account for Bowie has posted a lengthy tribute, as well as some images of the two icons performing together.
