‘This is my way of thanking Dr Kani’ – Sello Maake KaNcube

Today, 4 October, was the official opening day for the second season of the theatre production of ‘Nothing But the Truth’ by John Kani at Sandton’s Theatre on the Square.

The award-winning production’s playwright and star, Sello Maake KaNcube, told The Citizen that he dedicated the show to Dr John Kani and wanted to give him his flowers while he is still alive.

“This is my way of thanking Dr Kani for showing me, as a young man, that anything is possible. I learned from him that one can make a living and go on to have a magnificent life using their craft and God-given talent.

What to expect from the play

Maake KaNcube said the show resembles the struggles many black families endured during and post-apartheid.

He added: “The show is unique because it was written and first performed by the great Dr John Kani. It’s a remarkable story that resembles the struggles that many black families endured during and post-apartheid

“Each character is unique and tells a different story. The audience can expect to be taken through a beautiful but emotional roller-coaster.”

“Its performance exceeded our expectations. We got very good reviews, and as a result, we had to have a second season due to public demand,” he said.
