With the theme African luxury: precious metals, Saturday’s 2019 Sun Met in Cape Town was going to be a glittering affair. It went further: a social event with global appeal. Arriving on a helicopter to launch his own line of Champagne, it was super-athlete Usain Bolt’s second year at the Met.
But this year also showed cohesive and elevated red-carpet appearances at Kenilworth race course and live performances from Lira, Mi Casa and the Soweto String Quartet at the VIP marquee Glenlivet JazzTown.
Bolt’s Mumm Olympe Rosé was revealed at the GH Mumm Paddock Club. “I asked if anyone ever tried to mix champagne and cognac. And this inspired some creative thinking,” Bolt said.
While he was bubbling to the top, so were South African stars and designers. Mumm’s master of celebrations, Minnie Dlamini-Jones, hit the red carpet in a Gert-Johan Coetzee.
