Thando Thabethe finally speaks out in support of ‘Nampree’

After an outcry from social media users that celebrities were not publicly showing their support for DJ Fresh and Euphonik rape accuser known as “Nampree”, one other celeb has spoken out.

Former 5FM radio host and DJ Thando Thabethe received mounting pressure from the likes of Podcast and Chill host MacG for her “silence” in regards to the rape allegation, as she has worked with DJ Fresh in the past.

Euphonik trended last Saturday for sharing a screenshot showing the woman’s number, while others questioned the authenticity of the message that claimed she lied about the allegation. After this incident, Boity and Miss Universe Zozibini Tunzi publicly lambasted Euphonik’s behaviour and the handling of the case by the police.

Nampree accused Fresh and Euphonik of drugging and raping her in 2011. The case was dropped on 15 February due to insufficient evidence.

During the heavy media coverage of the allegation, podcasting host MacG and his co-host, Sol Phenduka, expressed their disappointment at celebrities who were outspoken about transphobic comments made on their show. They called Thabethe’s criticism a form of “fake outrage”.

MacG lashed out at the “hypocrisy” of Thabethe who labels herself as a gender-based violence activist. He said many insults included telling her to post “nudes” and to “shut up” if she is unwilling to speak out against Fresh and Euphonik.

Nearly a month later, Thabethe has finally responded: “The personal attacks and even the resorting to ‘posting nudes’ deserves nothing but my contempt and as such, really are of no real importance in my life.

“However, what is hurtful is the attempt to minimise the work so close to my heart, that which I do for vulnerable women and children.”
