Thabo Mbeki pays tribute to Thandi Klaasen at funeral
The jazz legend was laid to rest at Heroes Acres cemetery.
JOHANNESBURG SABC Studios – AUGUST 10, 2013 – Thandi Klaasen accepting her award. The Standard Bank Joy of Jazz paid tribute in Women’s Month by honouring five of the country’s national cultural treasures with lifetime achievement awards during a presentation held at the SABC studios in Aucland Park, Johannesburg. Lauded for their contribution to South Africa’s rich musical history, Sathima Bea, Thandi Klaasen, Abigail Kubeka, Dorothy Masuka and Sylvia Mdunyelwa have been named this year’s Standard Bank Joy of Jazz 2013 Lifetime Achievement Award recipients. Special tributes by Dorothy Masuku, Caiphus Semenya and Abigail Kubheka were given at the funeral. The funeral service was packed with dinitaries, politicians and musicians.
