Teko Modise details how Orlando Pirates performed muti rituals in tell-all book

Cape Town City midfielder Teko Modise released his new memoir, The Curse of Teko Modise, on November 28.

The tell-all book details some of the most dramatic moments in his life, including how Orlando Pirates players allegedly performed muti rituals before games.

The rituals are said to have occurred when he played for the Pirates, between 2007 and 2011.

“We believed in muti a lot at Orlando Pirates. We used to bath a lot [in muti]. The whole body was itchy,” Modise asserted at his book launch.

“Players didn’t know what was in the bath. We just did what we were told to do, and if we didn’t do what were supposed to do, obviously it’s got its own punishment,” he added.

“It [muti] is within the culture of Orlando Pirates. I found it there, and I’m sure there are guys who have played before me that would be cultured like that.”

Modise is the second former Pirates player to claim that the club was using muti after Benson Mhlongo said Platinum Stars was the only club he had played for that never forced him to use muthi in an interview with SABC Sport.

The claims have received mixed reactions on social media, with many unfazed by the club’s reported practices.
