Tax evading Ringo Madlingozi in trouble with SARS

Afro soul musician Ringo Madlingozi has landed himself in the bad books of the taxman.

According to The New Age, Madlingozi has been deducting but not forwarding the Pay As You Earn (PAYE) contributions of his employees to South African Revenue Service (SARS) since 1999, and now owes R1.5m in PAYE and R421 693 in VAT.

The award-winning musician reportedly appeared in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, to face up to the more than 40 charges of theft brought against him by SARS. His next court date has been scheduled for 27 November.

According to tax attorney June Marks, Madlingozi could receive a minimum sentence of 15 years in jail and be ordered to pay back three times the amount he owes if found guilty.
