The #ZumaMustFall has been trending on Twitter since last week after President Jacob Zuma removed Nhlanhla Nene as finance minister and replaced him with David van Rooyen. Things got worse when Van Rooyen was again removed from his position and replaced with former Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan.
The removal of Nene cost the country at least R169 billion, according to reports.
On Wednesday, there were a number of marches around the country calling for the president to step down. EFF leader Julius Malema refused to sign the petition, saying “it was initiated by white capital which called Marikana workers criminals”.
Malema doesn’t seem to be the only one with those sentiments as Somizi Mhlongo took to his Instagram to voice his opinion on “racist white South Africans hoping that Zuma’s fall will give them a white president or bring back apartheid”. He says their hopes are “a true denial of the reality.”
Somizi goes on to explain the impossibilities of it happening as that of US presidency hopeful Donald Trump winning the presidency or Oscar Pistorius believing he’ll one day take part in the Olympics.
Some of his followers disagreed with his post while some shared his sentiments, with one zazaphakathi writing: “In South Sfrica everything is about race, the sooner sum people realise that the better… don’t go on Instagram and twitter acting like SA is a united country DON’T… you know very well that no matter how much I white smiles with u they still don’t like u, the amount of hate 90% of whites have for blacks is nonchanging and will never change and WE know it, they care about themselves and only themselves…lets not go on social media and pretend.. we are being told to move on from apartheid, u know why? So tht white ppl can feel better about themselves, clear their conscious!!! Apartheid is a scar that will never heal and it will still affect us 20 years from now……90% of my people live in shacks and have been doing so for years, nobody cared (whites)… now because it affects your banks I must jump up and down???”
In their disagreement, some said it was wrong of Somizi to “assume” all white South Africans want apartheid to come back or a white president. They lashed at him for “making the march a race issue” and using a picture of the march that took place in Cape Town because it showed predominantly white people “to turn the march into a race thing”.
