Former 7de Laan star cleared of drunk driving charges

Former '7de Laan' actor Sekoati Tsubane was yesterday cleared of the drunk driving charges brought against him last year.

Known for his role as Kabelo Padi in the popular Afrikaans SABC2 soapie, Tsubane was arrested in March 2012 and released on R500 bail.

His PR manager, Janis Ellis, at the time explained that the actor was pulled over by the metro police after failing to adhere to a three-way-stop sign in Melkbosstrand at around 11pm.

Die Son reports that Tsubane appeared at the Atlantis Magistrate’s Court in Cape Town on Thursday, where magistrate Alta le Roux relieved him of all charges due to various inconsistencies between the testimonies of the state’s witnesses.

Arresting officer Jonathan Walker in his testimony explained that he initially only intended to give Tsubane a ticket for skipping the stop sign, but that he eventually arrested him because he was unsteady of his feet when got out of his car.

A forensic scientist from the state laboratory testified that the actor’s blood alcohol level was 0.31, a high number generally linked with physical effects such as passing out and vomiting.

Magistrate Le Roux said in her ruling that the irregularities between Walker and the forensic doctor’s statements were specifically conspicuous.

Following the verdict, Tsubane reportedly thanked the magistrate for allowing him to finally continue with his life and focus on his career. She said his reputation suffered a blow that can now be restored.
