The 31-year-old rapper, whose real name is Khulani Morule, is recovering at home after officers opened fired on his car, which reportedly matched the description of one linked to a criminal the police are currently looking for.
According to Eye Witness News, Chana has laid attempted murder charges against the South African Police Force.
His manager, Refiloe Ramogase, is quoted as saying of the injuries he sustained: “He’s just very lucky that the bullets ended up in the vehicle’s seat. One bullet is lodged in his finger and there’s some shrapnel in his back.”
The incident took place just after the New Road off-ramp in Midrand during the early hours of Monday morning, as Chana left a nearby Caltex garage where he stopped on his way to a gig in Pretoria.
Speaking on behalf of the Police, spokesperson Neville Malila has claimed that action was taken because Chana didn’t pull over when officers tried to stop him.
“Members that were on the off ramp jumped into the road and flagged the vehicle down. The vehicle didn’t stop and that is when two warning shots were fired at his vehicle,” he said.
Ramogase, however, in a statement to Metro FM apparently hammered home his claim that the shots fired by the police were not warning shots aimed at the boot or wheels of the car, but they were shooting “to kill”.
“No one said ‘stop’, he [Chana] just realised what was going on [and had to stop],” he said.
