National Film & TV Awards give Connie Ferguson a ‘Shona moment’

Connie Ferguson walked away with Outstanding Performance of the year, Celebrity Personality of the Year and Best TV Drama Series.

Actress Connie Ferguson was honoured at the recent National Film & TV Awards where she walked away with three awards on the night, including an award for tv show Kings of Joburg, which was her late husband’s brainchild.

“I am really honoured and blessed to win this award and thank you to NFTA and all who voted for us. This is the first year and I am looking forward to celebrating next year and many more years to come with the National Film & TV Awards South Africa,” said Ferguson on the night.

A Shona moment

In an interview with DJ Fresh on his podcast a few months ago, the broadcaster asked Ferguson about times where she reminisces on her late husband, Shona Ferguson. The actress said she ponders on him many times; this Fresh described as the ‘Sho moment’.

Shona passed away in 2021 at the Netcare Milpark Hospital from Covid-19-related complications.

On Saturday Netflix’s Kings of Jo’Burg, which was Shona’s brainchild, won the Best TV Drama Series of the year. Ferguson accepted the award in what could’ve been described as a ‘Sho moment’.

In a dedication to Shona, Connie said: “My husband came up with the concept of Kings of Joburg. We needed to honour him; we kept his memory alive in story. So Simon is still a big part of the story, even though the physicality of the character is not there. So I think people are really going to enjoy what we’ve done with this one.”

A glitzy affair

The Opera Theatre in Pretoria was the venue for the glitzy award ceremony on Saturday evening. The awards are produced by the National Film Academy with versions in the United Kingdom and USA have expanded to South Africa with a mission to promote, celebrate and provide exposure for actors, actresses, films, programmes and the film and TV industry in South Africa to a global audience.

The seasoned actress, who made her name on Generations as Karabo Moroka, was bestowed with the Outstanding Performance of the year, Celebrity Personality of the Year and Best TV Drama Series. All the categories were voted for by the public and more than 1.7 million TV/Film fans voted this year.
Some of the winners on the night included Celeste Ntuli who won Best Comedian, TV host Katlego Maboe scooping the Best TV Presenter award and Abdul Khoza winning Best Supporting Actor in a TV Series for his work on The Wife.
