‘Giving us the middle finger’: Reactions to DJ Maphorisa and Thuli’s statement

DJ Maphorisa and Thuli have released a joint statement asking for privacy as they deal with the matter privately.

Many people tweeted “I believe Thuli” after the former Generations: The Legacy star laid an assault charge against her boyfriend Themba Sonnyboy Sekowe, popularly known as DJ Maphorisa.

The actress later dropped the charges, which is now followed by their joint statement. In the statement, the couple admits that the matter received mixed public attention, causing a great deal of emotional stress on them.

They also warn that they: 

“Reserve their rights to individually pursue legal action against people making defamatory, and/or false statements in relation to this matter.”

The statement has since sparked hilarious reactions as netizens continue to share their interpretations of the statement. As a result, the popular social media phrase “Forever Yena” joined the trending topics. Fans say Thuli basically said: “To answer your questions, forever yena,” in that statement.

DJ Maphorisa’s R4 000 bail

National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson Phindi Mjonondwane said Maphorisa allegedly hit Thuli with open hands and strangled her after she confronted him about an incident that happened the previous night where he was booked to perform.

The DJ appeared at the Randburg Magistrates’ Court on Monday last week, after the actress laid a charge at the Sandton Police Station, having Maphorisa arrested immediately. During the proceedings, Thuli filed a withdrawal in which she agreed for the DJ to be released on bail. He was then granted R4 000 bail.

Private resolution

In a statement that the pair released yesterday, they shared that they have decided to resolve their issues privately. They also requested the public to give them the time and space to return to their work without any obstructions.

“Being public figures, it is unavoidable that the public, media, and their respective commercial partners all have an interest in this matter. 

“It is the desire of both parties to return to their respective fields of work following the now concluded private resolution of this matter. Neither of the parties has any intention to allow this private matter to impact their respective, or the other party’s brand and professional interests,” the statement reads.
