Mhlekwa Mahlangu, isiNdebele newsreader dies

Tributes have been pouring in for Mhlekwa Mahlangu who died on Sunday. According to a statement from the SABC, the isiNdebele newsreader and producer died after complications due to respiratory problems.

Mahlangu joined the SABC in 2002 and became the first female isiNdebele newsreader in 2010. She captivated audiences with her bubbly personality and bright smile. Mahlangu had previously worked as a newsreader at the Winterveldt Community Radio station.

In 2004, Mahlangu put celibacy under the spotlight when she told City Press she had been celibate for five years.

“I am free emotionally and spiritually,” she told the publication. “I have no need to complain about anyone. Of course I do not plan to stay celibate forever. I am a woman who will need to have children one day.”

Mahlangu was 39.

Details of her memorial are yet to be announced.
