Mboro ‘demands’ R4.9k from each congregant he has ‘helped’

Speaking at his church in Ekurhuleni on Wednesday, pastor Paseka ‘Mboro’ Motsoeneng reportedly asked his congregants to fund his legal fees in his battle with Commission for the Promotion and Protection of Cultural, Religious and Linguistic Communities (CRL Rights Commission).

“I’m calling on you to pay my legal battle because I must fight [Thoko Mkhwanazi-Xaluva, the chairperson of the CRL Rights Commission],” he was quoted as saying by The Sowetan on Thursday.

Mboro also said he was going on strike for nine weeks following a report by the commission calling for the regulation of churches and an investigation into harmful religious practices.

The pastor reportedly said he did not understand why the commission was still after him even though he had registered his church, claiming he was being “targeted” because he was South African and black.

“I’m washing my hands. I don’t care anymore. I am going to stop all the services that I provided to the community because Thoko said I am no good,” he added.

He reportedly then demanded R4 900 from each of the more than 5 000 congregants he has apparently helped.

“I want all children and women that I helped to honour and thank me. Congregants must also send me nine SMSes each at R5 per SMS. These will be for support while I’m on strike. If I don’t get it, Thoko will give you the help I provided,” he added.
