Mariah Carey allegedly demands Table Mountain turns purple

Mariah Carey reportedly demands that Table Mountain’s floodlights be switched on and shine purple during her performance.

Mariah Carey is rumoured to have requested that the Table Mountain in Cape Town turns purple during her performance, Channel 24 reports.

The singer is on The Sweet Sweet Fantasy Tour tour, and her stops include Johannesburg, Durban and Cape Town, where she will on Tuesday night kick off the South African leg of her tour.

Carey reportedly demands that Table Mountain’s floodlights be switched on and shine purple during her performance, apparently in honour of the late legendary musician Prince, affectionately known by fans as ‘the purple one’, according to the website.

According to what appears to be landmark’s official website, the usage of the floodlights is subject to strict policy and are only switched on after an application has been submitted and approved by the city council.

Priya Reddy, spokesperson for City of Cape Town told The Citizen the relevant departments within the City of Cape Town had not yet received such an application.

“The technical approval of the application would be done by the Electricity Services Directorate. The application would also have to be approved by the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Utility Services and, if necessary, the Executive Mayor would be consulted,” she said.

She added there had not yet been an approval process for the lighting of Table Mountain on Tuesday night.
