The achievement came after his recent theatre success as the lead in Let’s Get It On – The Life and Music of Marvin Gaye. We chatted to the former Idol about what’s next on his agenda.
What have you learned from your theatre experience?
I have learnt to engage with the audience on a new level, keeping them captivated and interested all times. Story-telling and giving history and background to a song carries a lot of weight, rather than just singing from one song to another. I have also learnt a lot about acting, learning, scripting, not just memorising but living it… I have learnt to appreciate the theatre industry in general, it’s a hell of a lot of work, which people take for granted. Both as a musician and on an individual level I have acquired a great amount of skills.
What are you working on at the moment?
I am currently in studio. I have been inspired by the music of Marvin Gaye, which I had to live and breathe for two months. It left me no choice but to tap into new songs and inspiration. I’ve found myself waking up late at night with new lyrics and melodies to compose. I am currently working towards the music video for my new single Best I Ever Had. I’ve also been sharing about music, my life and my book called The Dream of an Idol, inspiring others to pursue their dreams.
What song will be coming up next?
I can’t say what the next one would be at this stage. It’s between Love Me Down and Don’t Say No, which I’m still producing and haven’t realised. At this rate we’re bound to release a fourth album. I can’t say when though.
