Kelly Khumalo’s sister breaks silence on Senzo Meyiwa’s death

Kelly Khumalo’s sister, Zandie, has given her version of what happened on the day Senzo Meyiwa was killed.

Zandie was one of the people in their mother’s Vosloorus house when the soccer star was shot dead in October 2014.

The case has been thrust into the spotlight again after parody account, @AdvBarryRoux, claimed Longwe Twala – who was dating Zandie at the time – shot Senzo using his father, Chicco Twala’s gun. Both men deny the claims.

Zandie corroborated Longwe’s story that he managed to run outside the house after armed robbers stormed the residence.

Speaking to Ukhozi FM, Zandie gave a detailed account about what happened. She says they were enjoying a meal her mother had cooked for them when the drama unfolded.

“While we were eating‚ people stormed into the house. They immediately demanded cell phones and money. When they said this‚ I took my phone and hid it under the pillow on the sofa. Longwe then stood up pushed one of the men and forced his way out …

“When we saw that Longwe had ran‚ we jumped and tried to grab one of the men who was trying to force himself into my bedroom‚ which Kelly had ran into (sic),” Tshisa Live quoted her as saying.

Zandie says they were able to push the man towards the door.

“It was a huge scuffle. All of a sudden there were gunshots. When I heard the gun‚ I ran and hid myself in the bathroom. I did not run alone but with Tumelo [Senzo’s friend] because he was next to me. I then heard two gunshots while I was in the bathroom. I looked‚ hiding behind the bathroom door‚ to see what was happening. I then saw Senzo running to hide himself. I asked myself: ‘Why is he running?’”

She says she saw her mother and Kelly running towards Senzo, who was lying on his back.

“Kelly began to cry out: ‘Please help my husband’‚” Zandie recalled.

She says one of the men then took a phone that had been charging on a sofa near where Senzo was lying.

“My mother tried to hide the phone but this boy came and hit my mother with his elbow in the stomach‚ and she dropped the phone.”

Zandie added that when she realised the boys were gone, she rushed out of the bathroom.

“I then rushed out, and went to take my phone and tried to call. I did not know which number to dial because I was in panic. I then went outside and called neighbours.”

When she got back Senzo was being loaded into his SUV as it was thought the ambulance would take too long.

“We then got into the car. I then continued to apply pressure on the chest wound where Senzo was hit. As we drove along the way‚ I could see that Senzo wanted to close his eyes …

“I then felt that his stomach was becoming cold. We arrived at the hospital and went to the emergency ward. Medical staff began examining him and later my mother arrived. She rushed to where medical staff was helping Senzo‚ the next thing I heard was her voice screaming.”

Chicco Twala caused a stir last week when he called for everyone who was inside the house when Senzo died to be arrested, so that the truth would come out. He says he does not believe that a robbery took place.

Zandie says her family has always co-operated with police.

“Even on Saturday‚ I was at the police station. I arrived at 3pm [and stayed] until 12 at night. We were giving all the information we have to the police. We are trying our best to help as much as we can so that they can get the people who did this‚” she said.
