Kelly Khumalo trying to ‘move on’ after Senzo murder

Up until now, the Asine singer has kept a low profile since her boyfriend, Bafana Bafana captain Senzo Meyiwa was shot and killed at her mother’s house in Vosloorus two weeks ago.

In her first public appearance since the incident, Khumalo was chatting away happily with friends before the awards began.

This is not the first time Khumalo stole the show at an awards ceremony: last year, after months of speculation about her relationship with Meyiwa, the singer showed off her pregnant belly telling reporters that she was expecting the goalkeeper’s baby.

This year was no different as everyone wanted a piece of her: guests at the event even lined up in front of the singer for “selfies”.

When The Citizen approached Khumalo, the singer said she was doing as well as she could be under the circumstances. “I’m still trying to come to terms with what happened. I’m also trying to move on,” she said.

The Generations cast, Sports Minister Fikile Mbalula and public protector Thulo Madonsela were among the crowd favourites at the Feather Awards this year.

The awards which took place in Sandton, Johannesburg honour celebrities and personalities who inspire the South African Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transexual Intersex (LGBTI) community.

Mbalula walked away with the Sports Personality Of the Year Award at the quirky and lighthearted ceremony.

“Everyone has the right to live the way they want to live,” Mbalula said as he received his award. “Gay and Lesbian rights are human rights too. I’m honoured to be at this event tonight.”

The former cast members of South Africa’s leading soapie, Generations, took the award for Drama Queen Of The Year, beating singers Chomee and Arthur Mafokate, popular couple Dj Euphonik and  Bonang Matheba, and frenemies  Aka and Casper Nyovest who were nominated in the category.

The awards, which are in their sixth year, were hosted by Akhumzi Jezile and Sade Gilliberti.

Khumalo presented the Role Model of the Year award in which Selimathinzi presenter beat public protector Thuli Madonsela for the top award. The guests at the event went wild when Madonsela was named as one of the nominees.
