Jukebox Thursday: R Mashesha keeps singing

Record label owner DJ Tira announced on his Twitter that R Mashesha had passed away from complications after surgery. Social media was passing on their condolences to the fallen star and all of a sudden it wasn’t long until social media users (who somehow believed it was their business) started speculating about the cause of his death.

It’s no secret that Mashesha had been ill in the last couple of years. He lost weight and even had to stop performing for a while to focus on his health. As soon as this happened, R Mashesha became a target for cyber bullies who urged him to get tested for HIV, this escalated to jokes about the virus and the rapper’s weight loss.

Even after R Mashesha addressed the rumours in an interview with Drum Magazine in which he said he wasn’t HIV positive, he was still the subject of jokes about HIV.

According to DJ Tira’s and Big Nuz’s social media pages, R Mashesha’s memorial service will be held at Ethekwini Community Church on Thursday at 3pm and the funeral service will take place at King Zwelithini Stadium in Umlazi, Durban, on Saturday, 15 August 2015 at 9am.
