It’s not easy dating a footballer – Mpho Maboi

Sports presenter Mpho Maboi was on Monday a guest on CliffCentral, sharing with Gareth Cliff about her life away from sports, relationships, family and her career journey – we have to admit, she’s been there, done that.

Maboi was no different from her usual self on Twitter; funny, opinionated and straightforward, something she admits has gotten her into trouble before, especially when she asked if EFF commander-in-chief Julius Malema’s weight loss was intentional or a result of political stress.

Cliff commented on how “fresh” she was looking for a Monday morning, to which Maboi responded that she was pretending to be “alive” because she was exhausted from the Durban July. She further told Cliff she would have preferred to stay at home had she not been working, because every celeb who lived in Joburg was at the July – she even suggested it should be called the Joburg July in Durban. What seems to be annoying about celebville, according to Maboi, is the “fake conversations” and illusion that celebs have money “when there is actually nothing in their bank accounts”.

Cliff further asks about her relationship with SuperSport United midfielder Reneilwe Letsholonyane, with whom she has a son. Maboi tells Cliff they are still a couple, though she had said in the past that things were not working out between them. The two were in a relationship for a year then broke up for two years, and have now been together for two years.

Maboi says it’s not easy dating a footballer, “it’s like dating a DJ”. Gareth, however, did not seem to understand how it could be difficult for her when she knows the sport world. The major problem with dating a footballer seems to be the travelling. “It helps if you’re in the same kind of space because when he’s gone for like a week you don’t think he’s gone to be with girls, I know exactly where he’s going, his coach knows me,” she says.

Maboi then lays into Diski Divas, who she claims don’t even care about sports. “Do you even know what’s happening or are you just happy that he buys you a bag?”

We hope she does not get into trouble for this one.
