Growing up in a religious family where respect for your elders is of the utmost importance, Davel wouldn’t dare to behave like Haines does on Isidingo.
“I think the stark differences between myself and my character are what makes this role so challenging,” says Davel.
“My character is larger than life and out there, and I’m the kind of guy who likes to mind his own business. I also don’t agree with the way Bradley speaks to his parents so it becomes difficult to to chanel that attitude sometimes.”
Unlike his character, who is obsessed with rugby, Davel enjoys cultural activities like dancing, singing and acting.
After matriculating from the Lady Grey Arts Academy, he completed his national diploma in dance and dance teaching
at Tshwane University of Technology (TUT), where he majored
in ballet.
He is also a qualified personal trainer and is currently a body conditioning and fitness lecturer at TUT.
After completing his studies he performed in the musicals Jesus Christ Superstar and Joseph and His Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.
His acting career took off in 2006 with the role of Scab in local soap Egoli. When he struggled to find work he decided to join Survivor South Africa: Santa Carolina.
“There isn’t a lot of work for actors in our country’s entertainment industry,” he says.
Since his television debut on Egoli, he’s landed leading roles in Villa Rosa, Getroud Met Rugby, and the movies Hoofmeisie and Platteland. But working on Isidingo is a true blessing, he explains.
“I’ve always loved Isidingo. It’s one of the few soaps that appeals to people regardless of race or class,” he says.
And working alongside veteran actors Michael Richard (who plays his dad) and Robert Whitehead (his on-screen uncle) is the cherry on top.
“Working with them is still very nerve-racking for me,” he says.
“They are legends, and I’m very blessed to be able to learn from them every day.”
