Harry and Meghan interview: Piers Morgan fans come to his defence

The storm of outrage about British television host Piers Morgan took a dramatic turn on Tuesday evening when it was announced he was “quitting” Good Morning Britain  after mounting complaints about the negative comments he made about Meghan Markle.

The journalist stormed off the stage live this week, saying “okay I am done with this” during a reaction segment to the Oprah interview. He stormed off when co-host Alex Beresford said it was right for Meghan to ignore him after she met Prince Harry.

A vocal critic of Markle since their friendship went nowhere when she met a prince, he has consistently launched scathing attacks against the former Suits actress. Morgan thinks she is a “sly social climber” and that her sit-down with Oprah was a lie.

ITV said in a statement Morgan decided it was time for him to leave and no further explanation would be given.

Since the news of his departure, people who aren’t too fond of Morgan are defending him, arguing freedom of speech, saying that despite his political views or opinions don’t align with theirs, silencing him is not the right thing to do.

Media personality Sharon Osbourne said she “stands” by him and many other British celebrities shared their support for the journalist.

Former England national soccer player Gary Linker tweeted: “Whether it’s a football manager, a television presenter or any profession for that matter, it’s always sad when someone loses their job.@piersmorgan is excellent at what he does and I’m sure he’ll be back on the telly soon.”

Morgan is still defending his comments and will not apologise.

“On Monday, I said I didn’t believe Meghan Markle in her Oprah interview. I’ve had time to reflect on this opinion and I still don’t. If you did, OK. Freedom of speech is a hill I’m happy to die on. Thanks for all the love, and hate. I’m off to spend more time with my opinions.”
