Dandala, who failed to make it to the award ceremony in Accra, won the coveted award for his role as serial bachelor Peter Poplampo in director Shirley Frimpong-Manso’s romantic comedy, Contract.
Breaking the news of his award on Twitter the popular actor wrote, “Just got a Best Actor award from Ghana Movie Awards. Thank you so much for the accolade.”
Commenting on the award to City Press the actor who is currently playing the part of Jet Hlatshwayo on SABC1’s End Game, said he had really enjoyed his foray into Africa.
“To be surrounded by such a high level of talent working together on a Pan-African project was exhilarating. There is so much potential on the continent that it is a shame we don’t do more collaborations of this kind.
“I think there is scope for more similar projects going forward and I would love to be part of that.”
He added, “It’s such an honour to be acknowledged for the work one does, but even more so on your home ground.”
“This means a lot to me because it’s an award for an African project that was viewed and appreciated by an African audience.”
Dandala said that despite its success he doubted that the movie would be released in South Africa due to a lack of interest in African stories here.
