Jesse Clegg, son of the late Johnny Clegg, has broken his silence and paid tribute to his father in his first post since the news of his passing.
The Suvuka and Juluka frontman succumbed to his illness after a long battle with pancreatic cancer.
His passing has been confirmed by his manager, Roddy Quin, who is also the family’s spokesperson.
“Johnny leaves deep footprints in the hearts of every person that considers him/herself to be an African. He showed us what it was to assimilate to and embrace other cultures without losing your identity. An anthropologist that used his music to speak to every person. With his unique style of music, he traversed cultural barriers like few others. In many of us, he awakened awareness,” Quin said in a press release.
In his message posted on Twitter, Jesse thanked his father for the “magical gifts” he gave the world and “for creating a special place in [his] life and family”.
“You have inspired me both as a musician and as a man, and given me the tools to live a meaningful life.”
He concluded his message by saying: “Hamba kahle dad, be at peace. You have done so much and we honour you. Love you always.”
