Guinness oblivious to Black Coffee record

In 2010, Black Coffee attempted to set a world record by DJing for 60 hours with just one hand, and subsequent reports that he managed to do so greatly boosted his reputation and prominence.

Black Coffee is unable to use one of his hands due to a serious injury he suffered after being hit by a car when he was thirteen.

The DJ’s world record attempt over the course of three days drew thousands of people to the Maponya Mall in Soweto, and there are many who believe that he is actually the holder of this record.

The Sunday Sun has, however, received confirmation that this is not the case.

Thando Nkosi, marketing co-ordinator for Pan Macmillan which publishes the Guinness Book of Records in South Africa, said: “Unfortunately we didn’t get any news about this record attempt. This is a first for us.”

Black Coffee’s camp doesn’t deny this. They revealed that they did invite a Guinness Book of Records representative to the event but ultimately couldn’t afford the fees.

Amaru Da Costa, manager at Black Coffee’s Soulistic Music label, says they tried their utmost to achieve their goal by eventually following a set guideline and posted the evidence to the Guinness head office in London.

According to the People’s Paper, Da Costa insists that there isn’t a “single article or interview in which Black Coffee or the DJ foundation confirmed that the record was broken and the DJ has always made sure that people knew it wasn’t true”.
