According to eyewitness reports, Lesego was happily nursing a beer at a “joint” in Rosettenville at the start of the weekend two weeks ago. “On Friday he was drinking with another tall guy who was wearing a cap. He drank again on Saturday, despite claiming he had quit alcohol,” the source told the City Press.
“This man told the media in 2011 that he had quit alcohol and was leading a clean life. But now he has secretly gone back to boozing without notifying his management. Now they are concerned that he will miss shows as he did in the past.”
Approached for comment Lesego’s manager Thomas Ndabi said: “I was not with him on Friday. When I heard that he was drinking I reprimanded him. He has not touched alcohol for almost three years and it’s bad if he has gone back to it.
“We will continue to give him the support he wants until he stays away from alcohol completely unless he drinks responsibly.” Lesego also personally responded to these rumours, admitting he was drinking but insisting that doesn’t mean he has fallen off the wagon completely.
“I was just having a few drinks to celebrate the successful production of my album,” he said. “It does not mean I have gone back to heavy drinking. People who say these things are jealous of me.”
Aside from his problem with alcohol, Lesego is known for his allegedly tumultuous relationship with Jaziel Brothers Luthando and Ntobeko Ngcizela, who produced the multi award-winning debut album that put him on the map in 2006, entitled ‘My Music’. Following the success of this album, the Ngcizela siblings started performing as afro pop duo The Jaziel Brothers, a move that didn’t sit well with their protégé, so much so that he reportedly decided to never work with them again.
After recovering from his alcohol-filled fall from grace, Lesego in 2012 returned to the local music scene with single ‘Mona Lisa’. He is currently recording his new album, ‘MyHome’.
